Alateen Safety Policy

Minnesota North Area Minimum Safety Requirements for Alateen and Al-Anon Members Involved In Alateen Service

  1. Every Al-Anon member involved with Alateen service must:

    1. Be an Al-Anon member regularly attending Al-Anon meetings.

    2. Be at least 21 years old.

    3. Have at least two years in Al-Anon in addition to any time spent in Alateen.

    4. Not have been convicted of any felony. Also not have been charged with child abuse or any other inappropriate sexual behavior, and not have demonstrated emotional problems, which could result in harm to Alateen members.

    5. Sponsors must have a response by the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to a Child Protection Criminal Background Check that we determine to be satisfactory.

  2. There must be two Alateen sponsors at every Alateen meeting actively working their program.

  3. Overt (open) or covert (not open) sexual interaction between any adult and Alateen member is prohibited.

  4. Conduct contrary to federal, state, and local laws is prohibited (smoking, drinking, drugs, curfew, etc.).

  5. Forms must be completed for parental/legal guardian permission and medical care, when applicable.

  6. Area Alateen Coordinator will process mandatory annual background checks for potential sponsors.

  7. This policy procedure will be reviewed by local counsel/attorney every Assembly period.

The Minnesota North Area Process for Registering and Starting Alateen Groups

  1. Step 1. New Group, get packet from coordinator, schedule a one-on-one with one of the members or more of the Alateen Committee.

  2. Step 2. Sign two sponsors for Criminal Check, and sign as many as they feel the group needs for interim or extra sponsorship, always to be coupled with a permanent sponsor.

  3. Step 3. The Alateen coordinator sends forms to St. Paul to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. When forms are returned in approximately 10 days, everything is copied and sent to WSO in Virginia Beach. The applicants are notified of acceptance or non-acceptance.

  4. Step 4. The Alateen group signs up for one-on-one with the Alateen Coordinator or a member of the ad hoc Committee.

  5. Step 5. Sponsors get training at next Assembly.
